Let me start off by saying, being authentic can be extremely hard. In a world where you are always wondering if people are being themselves or trying to be a version of something you’ve already seen; things can get lost in translation. When I decided to start this blog a while ago, I was blindly focused on creating a space for those who needed a place to be themselves. But what I didn’t realize is that in turn, I wasn’t being myself. My parents have raised me to be a young woman of character, strength, but most importantly someone who is willing to speak up for what they believe in no matter what. Someone who is authentic and not afraid to be who they are regardless of what others think.
So I took the time to think over this and here is a story about staying authentic to oneself through the eyes of my childhood.
When I was a little girl, I used to pick dandelions. I’d wrap them carefully into mini bouquets for the people I loved. One day I gave one of my bouquets to someone, and they refused to take it. They called them ugly and then continued to mockingly inform me that the delicate flowers weren’t flowers at all. Instead, they were pesky weeds no one liked. As a starry-eyed child, I tucked their negative comment in the back of my head space. It didn’t matter to me at the time whether or not someone liked what I liked.
However, later on in life following the crowd and who or what the crowd loved at the time became my only focus. Doesn’t that happen to us all at some point in our life? Often in society, we marvel at something or someone who we perceive as beautiful based purely on the fact that we’ve been systematically taught too. While some of us find the things that aren’t socially acceptable, to be the most captivating. If you put it into perspective, we are all like dandelions. We each come into this world with an inner beauty that demands to be allowed to shine. It comes in many forms and moves people in a way that is unexplainable; we are uniquely authentic. Thus, making each of us uniquely beautiful. Unfortortunetly, much like dandelions sometimes others may not see this.
But don’t let people’s negativity keep you down! You are the most capable of doing incredible things, but it all starts when you believe that you are capabale. One day you will be able to have the strength, and confidence to walk through any valley of life with your head held high because you know no matter what people think about you, your life, or the way you choose to express yourself. You are being your most authentic self, and that is beautiful.
So I will leave you with two questions.
“In the end, is sacrificing your unique beauty or what you’ve been guided to do worth being desired by outside forces?” Sometimes I struggle to answer yes or no until I begin to ponder my next question, “How will you and I make a better future?” Not just for us but the next generation, for immigrants coming from different countries hoping for a better life, the people who don’t follow the norm in regards to sexuality and identity, and the everyday people who want to pursue their dreams. I was put on this Earth to make others feel welcomed and accepted, so I choose to live in my unique light and create a future where no one has to question whether or not their inner light is magnificent.
And I hope that one day you will too.
